The Right Flange Size Changes Everything

We have seen mothers blame their breast pump for poor milk output, discomfort during sessions, or sore nipples after pumping, when the actual cause, in many cases, is a flange that does not fit correctly. The flange is the funnel-shaped shield that sits against the breast and creates the suction seal between the nipple and the pump motor. It is the single point of contact between the body and the machine, and when its inner tunnel diameter does not match the nipple correctly, every session produces either discomfort, reduced output, or both. The Deepsea Breast Pump Flange is available in three sizes, 17mm, 19mm, and 21mm, to accommodate the range of nipple diameters that commonly require a different fit from the standard flange included with Deepsea electric and manual breast pumps.

A correctly fitted flange allows the nipple to move freely in the tunnel during suction without rubbing the tunnel walls, and without drawing a significant amount of areola tissue into the opening. When the flange is too small, the nipple compresses against the tunnel walls during suction, restricting milk flow and causing friction soreness. When the flange is too large, too much areola is drawn in alongside the nipple, reducing the suction efficiency at the nipple itself and often causing bruising or swelling. The 17mm, 19mm, and 21mm size options cover the smaller end of the nipple diameter range not always served by the standard flange included with pumps, making this replacement flange the practical solution for mothers who found their pump sessions uncomfortable from the start. Pairing the correct flange size with the Deepsea Prime Manual Breast Pump or electric pump immediately improves the quality and comfort of every session.

To measure your correct flange size, measure your nipple diameter in millimetres at the base, not including the areola. Add 1 to 3mm to that measurement to find your ideal flange tunnel diameter, as the nipple should move freely without pressing the walls. If your nipple measures 15mm at the base, a 17mm or 19mm flange is the correct starting point. Replace flanges when the material becomes discoloured, deformed, or shows any cracking, as degraded material reduces suction seal quality and hygiene during sessions.

At Deepsea Care, we believe every component of the breastfeeding routine deserves the same care as the whole because every mother deserves the best care.

Incorrect Flange Size

Incorrect Flange Size

Key Feature A properly sized 17mm, 19mm, or 21mm flange creates a correct suction seal with the nipple moving freely in the tunnel during expression An undersized or oversized flange fails to create an efficient suction seal, restricting or misdirecting suction during every session
Nipple Fit Nipple moves freely in the tunnel, 1 to 3mm clearance around the nipple diameter, no areola drawn in excessively Undersized: nipple compresses against walls. Oversized: excessive areola drawn into the tunnel alongside the nipple
Milk Output Optimal suction efficiency at the nipple, maximum milk flow per session Reduced milk flow, incomplete emptying, lower output per session, regardless of pump suction level
Comfort No friction, no compression, comfortable sessions at all suction levels Friction soreness, nipple bruising, or swelling at the nipple base after sessions
Session Results Consistent, efficient milk expression from the first minute to the last In inefficient sessions, the mother often increases suction to compensate, worsening discomfort
Long-Term Effect Sustainable daily pumping with no cumulative skin damage Ongoing nipple soreness that may lead to reduced pumping frequency or early breastfeeding discontinuation
Solution Select 17mm, 19mm, or 21mm based on nipple diameter measurement plus 1 to 3mm Replace the correct-fit Deepsea flange immediately

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our products and services.

  • A breast pump flange, also called a breast shield, is the funnel-shaped cup that fits against the breast during pumping. The narrow tunnel of the funnel fits over the nipple and creates the suction seal that draws milk from the breast into the collection bottle. Flange size refers to the inner tunnel diameter, which must match the nipple diameter for the suction to work efficiently and comfortably. If the tunnel is too small, the nipple compresses against the walls during suction, causing pain and restricting milk flow. If the tunnel is too large, too much areola is pulled in, reducing suction efficiency at the nipple and causing swelling. The correct size allows the nipple to move freely in the tunnel with 1 to 3mm of clearance.

  • Measure your nipple diameter in millimetres at the widest point of the nipple base, not including the surrounding areola tissue. Add 1 to 3mm to this measurement to find your ideal flange tunnel diameter. The nipple should move freely inside the tunnel during suction without touching the walls, and only a small amount of areola should be drawn in at the base. If your nipple measures approximately 14 to 16mm at the base, start with the 17mm Deepsea flange. If it measures 17 to 18mm, try the 19mm. If it measures 19 to 20mm, the 21mm is the correct starting point. Nipple size can also change slightly during the breastfeeding period as tissue responds to repeated suction.

  • Using a flange that is too small causes the nipple to rub against the tunnel walls during suction, creating friction that leads to soreness, redness, and nipple pain after sessions. It also compresses the milk ducts during suction, reducing milk flow and overall output per session. Using a flange that is too large draws excessive areola tissue into the tunnel, creating a false suction seal that misses the nipple ducts and causes swelling or bruising at the nipple base. Both situations result in uncomfortable sessions and lower milk output than the pump is capable of delivering with the correct fit. Switching to the correct size resolves both problems immediately.

  • Replace your breast pump flange when the material shows any visible discolouration, cracking, deformation, or loss of the smooth surface finish that creates the suction seal against the breast. Flanges are direct-contact parts that should be replaced periodically regardless of visible wear, as repeated sterilisation and daily use degrade the material quality over time, even without obvious damage. If you notice a gradual decline in suction quality from your pump that is not explained by battery charge or valve condition, the flange is often the cause. Also, replace if your nipple size changes during breastfeeding and the current size no longer fits with 1 to 3mm of clearance.

  • The Deepsea Breast Pump Flange is designed for use with the Deepsea Prime Electric Breast Pump and Deepsea Prime Manual Breast Pump. Flange compatibility depends on the connector design of the pump, which varies between brands and models. Using a flange designed for one pump with a different brand pump may result in an improper seal, reduced suction transfer, or physical incompatibility at the connector. If you are using a non-Deepsea pump and looking for a replacement flange, confirm compatibility with your pump manufacturer before purchasing. For Deepsea pump users, this flange is the correct direct-fit replacement and size upgrade option across all three available sizes.
